Wildlife sanctuaries in Gujarat: Flamingo land of India – the little Rann of Kutch
The little rann of kutch is the India’s largest
birds population home covering more than 500 sq, km area. The sanctuary is
particularly known for the breeding of flamingo who descend here in thousands.
The journey to this wonderful land itself is adventurous which involves a camel
ride of about 48 hours from Kala Dungar. But sighting a wild Ass is not so tiring
and tedious. The speed and stamina of this marathon runner who gallop untiringly
for hours and touches a speed of more than 70 km/h over a short distance.

Gandhiji takes one through different habitats. Mainly the desert wilderness
of little Rann of Kutch, the marine ecosystems of the Gulf of Kutch and the
wetland of Khijadiya bird sanctuary and forest of Gir, is the little circuit
which offers glimpses of some of the rarest of wildlife species including
the Asiatic lion and Indian wild ass. A drive across this flat wilderness
is an exhilarating experience. Keen winds blow unchecked. The salt on the
surface of the plains left behind by sea rain and river water which inundate
the Rann during the monsoon sparkle to dazzling levels in the sunlight and
shimmering mirages seem to fill the horizon with water making the Rann resemble
an unending sea cost. Rann of Kutch acts as a breeding ground for flamingo,
pelican and avocet with ass being a protected species being rare.
