The hills of Sourashtra are full of thick jungle
with plenty of wild life. Sasangir National park, the home land of Asiatic Lion
covers an area about 1400 sq.km. with deciduous forest, rolling grasslands,
evergreen flora and hill tracts fed by seven rivers and interspersed by lakes.
The hill tracks provides scenic drive with exciting wildlife encounters. There
are more than 30 species of other animals in addition to the Asiatic Lion- the
Gir Lion. The commonly seen animals includes panthers, hyenas, antelope, etc.
The other adjoining sanctuary is the Hingolgadh
Sanctuary where Chinkara, NEELGAI, Jungle cat, Jackals and, Shrikes are in Abundance.
The Velavader National Park , the grasslands of which resembles with those of Masai
and Mara is the home of black buck and other antelopes. The Sanctuary is also known
for the largest population of Wolf. Above all , in the evening time harrier hawks
arrive in large number from nearby cotton fields and grasslands for evening roost.
This is perhaps the world largest roost of harriers.
